Stanton Vineyards - Our Wine

The Stanton family has been growing grapes in the Napa Valley since 1947. Beginning with the harvest of 1999, Doug Stanton began selecting some of their best Oakville Cabernet for the Stanton Vineyards label. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, the Stantons grow Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah. Roughly half of our acreage lies in the Oakville appellation, and the other half within the St. Helena appellation of the Napa Valley.

Stanton Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

James Suckling reviewed with 92 points

100% Stanton Estate Varietal Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

The Oakville appellation in Napa Valley has long been recognized as a unique combination of soil, topography and climate that join together to create an environment that produces world class cabernet sauvignons.

For over forty years the Stanton Family has grown exceptional cabernet grapes on their 42 acre Oakville Vineyard. Since 1999 they have produced award winning cabernets of their own from these grapes under the Stanton Vineyards label.

The growing season of 2013 was relatively normal except that we were in the second year of an historic California drought. Despite the lack of adequate rainfall, our yields were still near average, and our cabernet came in at 3.7 tons per acre.

This 2013 Stanton Estate Cabernet is expressively dark and fragrant, with juicy blackberry, cherry, currant and earthy nuances finishing with ample but well-integrated tannins.

This wine promises to be another success from Winemaker Dave Phinney and Winegrower Doug Stanton. As always, we hope you enjoy drinking it as much as we enjoyed growing and producing it for you!

 Stanton Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Stanton Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

100% Stanton Estate Varietal Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

The growing season of 2011 was cooler than normal, highlighted by one of the wettest Junes on record. Our crop yields from our Oakville cabernet produced a meager 2.6 tons per acre. This low yield was the primary reason we were able to patiently wait out an agonizingly late season until we reached our target grape maturity. This 2011 Stanton Cabernet has a fresh and fragrant forwardness that we have come to expect, a hardy middle, and finishes with well-integrated soft tannins.

100% Stanton Estate Varietal Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2010 growing season presented significant challenges. Two separate and extreme heat spikes rendered some of the fruit not suitable for premium wine production. With careful thinning of this inferior fruit we were able to produce one of our biggest and brightest cabernets to date. The 2010 Cabernet has a fresh fruit forwardness that we love, a hearty and full mid pallet, and finishes with delightful well-integrated soft, semisweet tannins that beg for another sip.

The growing season of 2008 produced smaller-than-normal berries and fewer clusters per vine. As such, our yields were almost half of normal. The result is a wine that is intensely concentrated with expressive aromas of ripe cassis, blackberry and blueberry. This fine wine finishes with smooth, well integrated oak flavors and medium to full tannins.

Stanton Saint Helena Petite Sirah 2013

Stanton Saint Helena Petite Sirah 2013

Rating: 92 points

100% Stanton Estate Varietal Petite Sirah

This 2013 Stanton Vineyards Petite Sirah appears to be more concentrated and even darker than recent vintages, and may require a little bottle age in order for the ample tannins to slightly soften. It marks the tenth vintage produced from this exceptionally well-drained and balanced St. Helena valley floor vineyard.

Weather conditions during the 2013 growing season proved ideal, as the fruit was harvested about a week earlier than average. The yield was at or near normal and produced 273 cases.

True Stanton Petite enthusiasts will recognize the consistent balance and structure of the wine that is produced from this extraordinary vineyard site. Dave Phinney, our friend and winemaker since 2002, has overseen this and every vintage of Stanton Petite Sirah from start to finish.

We hope you enjoy drinking this wine as much we enjoyed growing and producing it for you.

Stanton Saint Helena Petite Sirah 2011

100% Stanton Estate Varietal Petite Sirah

The growing season of 2011 was cooler than normal, and dominated by wet weather in June. By carefully managing our grape canopy and severely limiting the number of grape clusters per vine we were able to harvest earlier than normal, before another significant rain event that occurred in mid- October.

Our 2011 Petite Sirah is still 100% estate fruit, farmed with tender care by the Stanton Family, then sorted, crushed, fermented and barrel-aged under the watchful eye of Dave Phinney, our winemaker since 2002.

Stanton Saint Helena Petite Sirah 2010

100% Stanton Estate Varietal Petite Sirah

The growing season of 2010 was dominated by two significant heat spikes. The first in August and a second in September. By carefully eliminating the damaged and inferior fruit prior to harvest, we were able to continue our consistent string of 100% varietal petite sirahs, but at a much smaller case production.

Our 2010 Petite Sirah is every bit as dark and opulent as previous offerings. It opens with bright blueberry and cassis fruit, continues with a well integrated smokey middle, and finishes with big, burly tannins that are sure to satisfy the heartiest petite sirah enthusiast.
